Health Consciousness
The most common trait I’ve observed about how people view wellness is, “I don’t need to (fill in the blank) because I’m doing okay. I‘m getting by. I mean, I don‘t feel great, but show me someone who does!”
Our society has a lot of opposition for having a positive relationship with wellness. Seriously, how often do you hear doctors talking about preventing disease in a real, practical, natural way? Most of the emphasis upon wellness comes in times of experiencing ill-health, like the flu, or autoimmune viral activity. “I’m going to start taking better care of myself” you start telling people as you're blowing your nose. “I hate feeling sick.” you continue. Even in moments like that, most of the emphasis is still focused upon imbalance.
However, when you allow imbalance to remind you how much you value wellness, you can definitely aspire more deliberately to change your thinking and lifestyle towards becoming more physically optimal. That’s the emotionally healthy approach to experiencing imbalance, e.g. perceiving hardships as contrast to help you remember what you really want to feel.
As you get beyond feeling the effects of imbalance, you keep trying to remind yourself to take better care of yourself. Still though, you begin to allow yourself those little indulgences, until life has you thoroughly distracted again and giving yourself the tools you need to keep exaggerating well-being takes a back seat to doing whatever it takes to get by in your day. Sure, you keep telling yourself that you’ll change your habits, but you keep forgetting a little more every day. Then it happens; you get sick again. “Oh yeah, I was going to start eating better you think to yourself,” as your throat feels a little scratchy, your muscle tissue begins aching, and your thoughts become garbled with undertones of self judgment.
Why self judgment?
Well, you knew you needed to change your diet, or even go on a detox, but you still chose to chow on that muffin every morning again with your coffee, or overeat when you weren’t even that hungry to begin with.
All of those little decisions you make throughout the course of a day really add up, and you’re left with a body that performs just enough on a daily basis where you keep telling the story that you‘re doing “okay,” even when you know you are not. Besides, you’re too distracted with all the circumstances you need to deal with to make ends meet that taking care of yourself; the way you know you should; is a luxury you just don’t have time for.
Maybe you just don’t think you can afford to treat yourself the way you wish you could.
Or maybe you just haven’t experienced your body in a blissful enough state to know what you can expect for yourself on the positive side of things.
Either way, if you’re experiencing imbalance, you aren’t doing for yourself what you need to keep expanding upon the sensations of well-being.
How do I know that?
The body doesn’t lie.
If your body is fatigued; if your digestion is sluggish; if you’re constantly dealing with craving foods that don’t leave you feeling vital; if you get sick way too often, or incessantly feel like you’re fighting something off because your immune, circulatory, and lymphatic systems are compromised, then you are living in Sick Consciousness.
Most people in this country don’t just live in Sick Consciousness, but thoroughly abuse their bodies, making these times more about disease and imbalance than at any other point in history. Even in my short 30 years on this planet, there are more people living in obesity, experiencing chronic fatigue, and popping a pill to put a band aide on their symptoms, while acting like it’s a mystery why they don’t feel good. No, it’s not The Plague or a Spanish Flu-like Pandemic, but make no mistake about it, the effects of stress have created a society of people who live a lifestyle that inevitably creates chronic disease.
Interestingly enough, these present times are also synonymous with redefining what true well-being can be.
Contrast anyone?
There are small, but not insignificant percentages of people who are living in example for what well-being can look and feel like. In fact, here in Mt. Shasta, there are a lot of people who consciously choose to accentuate their well-being to new, previously unknown heights. Indeed, some people take the time to become aware about what constitutes well-being and constantly strive to meet those standards. I’ve worked on people in my massage practice who are always in a state of passionate curiosity for experiencing new, more exaggerated waves of wellness. They are continuously trying to exceed their own expectations for what well-being feels like.
Not everyone needs to keep manifesting virus to feel inspired to aspire for well-being. Get what I mean?
That being said, Sick Consciousness is the status quo in the model of Western Medicine. Most doctors will prescribe antibiotics, steroids, or anti-viral medications like Tami-Flu when people come to them for help. Unfortunately though, the Western Medicine model is all about treating symptoms, not bringing understanding for why your body manifest imbalance to begin with. Very few doctors are of the consciousness to really engage you about nutrition and prevention-minded dialogue.
That means it’s your responsibility to engage and educate yourself about how to elevate your own conscious-awareness for blueprinting a lifestyle that nurtures and cultivates wellness. The system can only change from Sick Consciousness to Health Consciousness if the majority of people in this country rise up and redefine what health means.
I’m here to assist you in acknowledging all those sensations of bliss that lay dormant in your body. Are you ready? Are you ready to feel the sensations of well-being so you may consciously choose to be more deliberate about your own level of wellness? Or are you going to wait for pain to manifest in your body before you feel like you can justify the expense of getting a massage?
Real well-being is about preventing imbalance from ever having to manifest. You don’t need to feel like shit before reaching out for help. That’s like giving into the cliché that men never ask for directions, no matter how lost they are. After all, if the Western model of Sick Consciousness is any example, the cost of treating disease and imbalance is far more expensive than taking action and making decisions that assist you in feeling well. Ironic, huh?
